Hardcover. Condition: very good. Dust Jacket Condition: good. First? Edition. First? Printing. 22 cm, 236 pages, illus., former owner's stamp on front endpaper. Extract from a review posted on-line. The Newells, Afghan specialists who have lived in and written extensively on that country, have provided an interpretation that is a much-needed antidote to reports in the Western press which have stressed both the unpopularity of the Communists and the "backwardness" of the Afghan people, an "evenhanded" treatment which implies that the benighted attitudes of the latter somehow justify the repressive policies of the former. As the Newells demonstrate, the Communists who attained power in the April 1979 coup were from the very beginning intent not on reforming the fabric of Afghan society, but on destroying it, in order to bolster their own tenuous power base. Moreover, this "revolution from the top" was carried out with all the arrogance and cruelty that have become the trademarks of Communist regimes around the world.…

Hardcover w/ Jacket. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. "This 10.5 x 13.75 inch, 93 page hardcover book with dust jacket is the 1960 printing of this title by the Sierra Club. This copy has the book in fine condition with a near fine dust wrapper. The brown cloth covers with silver lettering on front panel and spine show virtually no wear and the interior text pages again are in fine condition with just a touch of handling wear showing. The black-and-white photographs, with accompanying word poetry and description, all portray the Sierra Club's development of its Exhibit Format Series, which really "set the table" for the coffee-table-style pictorial book that today is very common. Ansel Adams provides the three-page forward about the life of Cedric Wright, mountain rambler and photographer who was a mainstay of Sierra Club activism. The dust wrapper does show some wear and one one-inch blue mark on the front panel and some spots on the rear panel but overall the wrapper is again near fine with only a touch of edge and folding wear showing. The wrapper is now protected by a mylar cover. The large inside wrapper flaps show a written piece by David Brower, who would soon become one of the most prominent American environmentalists and the rear flap shows advertising for another exhibit format series book. 93 pages.".…
