Stiff Wraps. First edition. 329 pages. 27.5 x 21.5 cm. The museum has over 400,000 items in its permanent collection, making it one of the largest in China. Especially notable is the museum's enormous collections of Ming and Qing imperial porcelain, which is among the largest in the world. Preparatory Office for the Academia Sinica Museum was established in 1933. Dr. Fu Ssu-nien envisioned the museum as a center for educating the public, promoting society's interest in cultural heritage and broadening the historical horizons of common citizens. By associating the artifacts with their relevant natural history, the museum differed considerably from other museums which simply displayed their collections out of context. Some of the Museum's contents were sent to Taiwan during the Japanese invasion of China. Profusely illustrated with color plates. Text in English and Chinese. Orig. illustrated stiff wrappers.
