Nash takes us through the dramatic developments that caused the League-which during the twelfth through fifteenth centuries was an association of north German towns and groups of German merchants abroad-to evolve from a protective organization whose purpose was to secure safe travel for its trading members to one whose main aim was to make money and monopolize trade in the Baltic region-which often meant taking severe, rigid, and restrictive action. The Hansa was not above force, bribery, even war. In its heyday, the Hansa had such might and financial power that it could dictate terms to kings and emperors. Nor was the Hansa slow to punish member merchants whose goods, by not meeting the League's high standards, could bring the League into disrepute. In Nash's account, it becomes clear that the story of the Hansa is a mixed one: on the one hand, the League was harsh and autocratic; on the other, it spread trade, prosperity, and culture in a brutal age.
