O texto está dividido em quatro partes, começando pela introdução e seguido pelas três conversas do vigário com os espíritos. Os espectros funcionam como a consciência do clérigo e "assombram-no" com as memórias e acusações das suas más acções. O texto terá sido escrito como forma de crítica aos costumes do clero madeirense, mas é apresentado sobre a forma de uma tradução para não ferir susceptibilidades. A errata no final do texto apresenta três instâncias em que o nome "Madeira" ou o adjectivo "madeirense" deve ser alterado para "Catania" ou "da Catania". Muito raro, não referenciado em Inocêncio nem na Porbase, Catálogo Geral das Bibliotecas Portuguesas. Muito importante para o estudo da sociedade madeirense e do anticlericalismo no século XIX.
