Paperback. Condition: Good. 'A Mumbai slum understood and imagined as never before in language of intense beauty' Salman Rushdie 'If Bollywood ever decides to do its own version of The Wire, this would be it' Barbara Ehrenreich Annawadi is a slum at the edge of Mumbai Airport, in the shadow of shining new luxury hotels. Its residents are garbage recyclers and construction workers, economic migrants, all of them living in the hope that a small part of India's booming future will eventually be theirs. But when a crime rocks the slum community and global recession and terrorism shocks the city, tensions over religion, caste, sex, power, and economic envy begin to turn brutal. As Boo gets to know those who dwell in Mumbai's margins, she evokes an extraordinarily vivid group of individuals flourishing against the odds amid the complications, corruptions and gross inequalities of the new India. 'A triumph of a book. A beautiful account of the sorrows and joys, anxieties and stamina, in the lives of the precarious and powerless in urban India' Amartya Sen, winner of the Nobel Prize for Economics 'Magnificent.a masterpiece. Quite simply, one of the finest works on contemporary India yet written' Sunday Telegraph. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

The American satirical writer Russell Baker (b.1925) worked as a columnist for The New York Times from 1962 to 1998 and hosted Masterpiece Theatre from 1992 to 2004. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951, Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder, commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world.

The format is approximately 10.75 inches by 9.25 inches. ix, [1], 241, [1] pages Illustrated endpapers. Illustrations (sine in color). Maps. Selected Bibliography., Index. Decorative dust jacket. This is a heavy, oversized book that if sent outside of the United States would require additional shipping charges. Introduction by Joseph Giovannini. More than 250 extraordinary photographs--including both newly commissioned color photographs and period images from the New York Transit Museum archives--chronicle one hundred years of architectural and design history from the New York City subway system, including everything from the interiors of the trains and architectural details of the stations to the development of the token and mosaic signage. Andrew Garn has worked as a photographer for magazines such as House & Garden, Fortune, the New York Times Magazine, and Vogue. The New York Transit Museum (also called the NYC Transit Museum) is a museum that displays historical artifacts of the New York City Subway, bus, and commuter rail systems in the greater New York City metropolitan region. The main museum is located in the decommissioned Court Street subway station in Downtown Brooklyn and Brooklyn Heights in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. There is a smaller satellite Museum Annex in Grand Central Terminal in Midtown Manhattan. The museum includes subway, bus, railway, bridge, and tunnel memorabilia; and other exhibits including vintage signage and in-vehicle advertisements; and models and dioramas of subway, bus, and other equipment. A program of lectures, seminars, films, and tours for all ages is offered at the museum. In addition, offsite programs consist of guided tours of MTA facilities, subway stations, artwork and architecture, and New York neighborhoods, as well as opportunities to ride vintage railway and bus equipment. Among the topics covered are Stations and Structures, Station Ceramic Designs, Metalwork and Lighting, Station Furnishings, Fare Collection, Signage and Graphics, Route and System Maps, Advertising, and Rolling Stock: Car Design.
