Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. The singing of waiata, of songs and chants, has always been an integral part of Maori life. Today waiata are heard in formal ceremonies on marae, in business or political meetings, and at casual, social events. But their texts alone make fascinating reading as an archive of historical, cultural and tribal life. Over a period of 40 years Sir Apirana Ngata collected and recorded hundreds of songs and chants from the iwi of Aotearoa which became the four volumes of Nga Moteatea. The first three volumes included translations and annotations by Ngata and the Ngati Maniapoto scholar, Pei Te Hurinui Jones. The contents of Part IV, the fourth volume, were not available until after the deaths of Ngata and Pei. It was first published in 1990 as an edition of the Maori texts, edited by Tamati Maturangi Reedy from Ngata's manuscripts, but without translation to English. Now, for the first time, this new edition of Part IV comes with a translation of the waiata and annotations by Hirini Moko Mead, of Ngati Awa. A scholar of rare and special expertise in Maori language and culture, he has also made important additions to the annotations. The translation to English opens up to a wide readership of Maori and non-Maori, nationally and internationally, the beauty of the poetic language of the waiata and a wealth of information about historic events and cultural practices of Maori life. Features an annotated collection of waiata. Suitable to Maori and non-Maori, nationally and internationally, this title presents the beauty of the poetic language of the waiata and information about Maori life. It also includes two CDs of waiata drawn from the Archive of Maori and Pacific Music at the University of Auckland. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Over a period of forty years Sir Apirana Ngata, distinguished leader and scholar, collected and recorded hundreds of songs and chants from the iwi of Aotearoa, which became the four volumes of Nga Moteatea, with translations and annotations by Ngata and Pei te Hurinui Jones. This is the second volume of a new edition of this national treasure, the largest and most comprehensive collection of Maori waiata and a unique contribution to New Zealand poetry. It is a rich resource for continuing research and scholarship in many fields, offers prime texts in the teaching of Maori language, literature and tribal history and serves as inspiration for contemporary composition and performance. This completely redesigned and reset edition published in association with the Polynesian Society, preserves the integrity of Ngata's and Pei's and their commentary. Long vowels in Maori have been macronised and changes have been made to conform to current usage with correction of errors in grammar, spelling and punctuation. Typography has been modernised. This edition also includes two audio CDs of waiata drawn from the Archive of Maori and Pacific Music at the University of Auckland. The annotated collection of waiata made by a distinguished Maori leader and scholar. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Soft Covers. Condition: VG. No Jacket. Revised. Sir Apirana Nagata (1874-1950) was a Maori leader, lawyer, scholar, statesman and politician and one of his major objectives was the preservation of the native language, at a time when Maori was often viewed as a dying race. Among his many written works was a two volime collection of songs and chants of many tribes, others on anthropology and the native peoples of the Pacific, His manual of Maori conversation and grammar was a more modest effort, but one aimed specificially at helping preserve the Maori language, but also for use by Europeans seeking to become familiar with it. This revised and enlarged edition of the manual is undated but possibly circa 1930s. The book is divided into five parts, the last being a English/Maori vocabulary. Brown, cloth covered, card covers VG with light mottling front vertical edge, more pronounced on back cover, small ink name top title page, small and decreasing incursion of insect erosion top corner for first 11 pages, small tear lower corner last two pages, text block otherwise VG+. Now quite scarce.

Hardback. Condition: New. A landmark book about four remarkable museum expeditions that contributed to a recovery of Maori society. From 1919 to 1923, at Sir Apirana Ngata's initiative, a team from the Dominion Museum travelled to tribal areas across Te Ika-a-Maui The North Island to record tikanga Maori (ancestral practices) that Ngata feared might be disappearing. These ethnographic expeditions, the first in the world to be inspired and guided by indigenous leaders, used cutting-edge technologies that included cinematic film and wax cylinders to record fishing techniques, art forms (weaving, kowhaiwhai, kapa haka and moteatea), ancestral rituals and everyday life in the communities they visited. The team visited the 1919 Hui Aroha in Gisborne, the 1920 welcome to the Prince of Wales in Rotorua, and communities along the Whanganui River (1921) and in Tairawhiti (1923). Medical doctor-soldier-ethnographer Te Rangihiroa (Sir Peter Buck), the expedition's photographer and film-maker James McDonald, the ethnologist Elsdon Best and Turnbull Librarian Johannes Andersen recorded a wealth of material. This beautifully illustrated book tells the story of these expeditions, and the determination of early twentieth century Maori leaders, including Ngata, Te Rangihiroa, James Carroll, and those in the communities they visited, to pass on ancestral tikanga 'hei taonga mo nga uri whakatipu' as treasures for a rising generation.
