In the early 18th century, this volume was in the collection of Gallus Winckelmann (16951757), a Benedictine monk and scholar active at Banz Abbey in Bavaria; his note on AA1: "Coemit ad usum F. Gallus Winckellmann Prof[essus] Banth[ensis]). The early-19th century signature of "Daniel Kendig" on front endpaper above perhaps an earlier inscription noting Lyra's commentaries. Then in England, the front pastedown with the mid-19th century bookplate of Joseph M. Lybrand (rector of Saint Paul's Church, Camden) and America with the early-20th century labels of the Philadelphia Divinity School (their bookplate and perforated stamp, formerly collection number 4436). This volume is part three of four in the second Koberger edition of the Bible printed in Nuremberg in 148687; parts one through three were undated with the fourth part dated 3 December 1487. This second edition was preceded by bible set printed by Anton Koberger in 1485. It was a monumental production incorporating the biblical commentary of medieval Franciscan scholar Nicholas de Lyra (12701349), with theadditions of Paul of Burgos (ca. 13511435) and responses to the latter by Matthias Doering (d. 1469), as well as the commentary of William the Breton (ca. 11651225) on the Prologues of Jerome. Part 3 of the set contained the books of the Major and Minor Prophets, along with the books of the Lamentations and Maccabees. Nicholas de Lyra's biblical gloss, or 'Postilla,' encouraged much scholarly discourse throughout the Middle Ages and was frequently reprinted into the 16th century. This edition includes the famous woodcut of Ezekiel's Vision and the various views and implements of Solomon's Temple, which were first printed by Koberger in 1481 with the complete commentary. This copy in an early German binding has a monastic provenance at Banz Abbey. ISTC ib00614000.

Contact seller5-star sellerSingle leaf, (11 ½ x 8 ½ inches). 27 lines in center block surrounded by 2 columns of 76 lines, rubricated with initials in red and blue (one small wormhole, slight browning at edges). Incunable leaf, likely from the "Biblia Latina cum Postillis Nicolai de Lyra," the Latin Vulgate Bible with Nicholas de Lyra's commentary. This p…articular leaf shows chapter 23 from the Book of Isaiah (in Latin Vulgate) in a center block of text, with Nicholas de Lyra's commentary surrounding it in two columns. The Bible verse begins, "The oracle concerning Tyre. Wail, O ships of Tarshish, For Tyre is destroyed, without house or harbor; It is reported to them from the land of Cyprus." The burden of Tyre focuses the prophet's message on the major coastal city of the Phoenicians to the north. The Greeks called them "purple folk" because of their famous purple dye. They were the shipping merchants of the Near East. Zidon (Sidon) was another prominent Phoenician coastal city. Isaiah foresees the coming destruction of this great commercial empire. Tarshish is the common designation for the westernmost part of the Mediterranean, as far as Spain. Chittim refers to western lands, especially the island of Cyprus. Isaiah announces that trade with these distant places will cease because of Tyre's destruction.

Condition: Very Good. MANUSCRIPT COMBINING A LATIN NEW TESTAMENT AND COMMENTARIES BY NICHOLAS OF LYRA. In Latin, decorated manuscript on paper, Northeastern Netherlands or Northwestern Germany, c. 1450-1475. Dimensions 275 x 198 mm., 383 folios, apparently complete, written in a formal cursive gothic bookhand without loops in tw…o columns of 38 lines, red initials, nine- to fifteen-line blue or parted red and blue initials, added running titles, which continue to part two of the volume; ff. 146-end, copied in a very neat controlled hybrida script, red initials 3- to-10 line (occasionally blue), a few with pen decoration,10-line red initial, six 10-line parted red and blue initials. BINDING: seventeenth century(?) plain vellum over pasteboard with yap edges. TEXT: This sizeable volume combines a copy of the New Testament, lacking only the Gospels, with the Commentaries by Nicholas of Lyra on the same books of the New Testament. Although possibly of independent origin, these two sections are contemporary and were united very soon after they were copied. This is the only manuscript we know of that combines the two within one volume, but it is easy to see how readers benefited greatly by having these complementary texts together. PROVENANCE: Evidence of the script, decoration, and watermarks suggests the first part of the manuscript, with the biblical text, was copied in Northwestern Germany, c. 1450-1475; evidence of the watermarks and script suggest the second half of the manuscript with Nicholas of Lyra's postillae likely copied in the Northeastern Netherlands or in Northwestern Germany, c. 1460-1470; belonged to Johann Heinrich Joseph Niesert (1766-1841); later owners, Isaac H. Hall and S. B. Pratt. CONDITION: In very good overall condition, f. 1 slit at the bottom inner margin, frayed in the outer margin, ff. 145v-146 paper noticeably darkened, f. 383 frayed at the gutter, few worm holes, rare stains from damp top margin in the second half, last few pages a bit fragile in the inner margin, vellum at the front now detached from the pasteboard and curling up, front and back covers rather dirty and scuffed. Full description and images available. (TM 1089).
