Hardback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. J. Russell Smith, London, 1869. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. Two volumes. 8vo. pp. xxvi, 236. Frontispiece. 3 illustrations. Volume two variant title: DISTINGUISHED AND NOTED CHARACTERS IN THE CEMETERIES AND CHURCHES Published in 1872. pp. xxv, 294. 2 illustrations. Several heraldic illustrations in the text. Bookplate of Hugh Brogan and list of subscribers in both volumes. Rebound in modern green cloth lettered gilt on spines. Two handwritten signed letters from Frederick Teague Cansick to J. Gough Nichols addressed from 28 Jeffreys St. N.W. the first dated March 11th 1870 and consisting of about 220 words and the second dated March 18, 1870 and consisting of about 150 words. In the first letter he says that he has searched through 'the church/churchyard of St Pancras and having 'dug out some' and turned over others that were upside down I do not think that there is one stone that has escaped my notice.' He says no trouble has been spared in deciphering the Latin inscriptions from the actual epitaphs existing, 'I think therefore my work the more valuable.' In the second letter he says it is ten years since he began copying from the stones and mentions some he could not decipher. He is collecting for a supplement and his next will be a volume on Highgate Cemetery and various others. He ends by saying he has found a copy of work that Nichols has kindly offered to correct. Frederick Teague Cansick (1829-1919) was born in North London. He recorded the monumental inscriptions from the gravestones in old St. Pancras graveyard which were displaced when St Pancras station was built and the railway line crossed the land. John Gough Nichols (1806-1873) printer and distinguished antiquary copied inscriptions and epitaphs. Denis Hugh Vercingetorix Brogan (1936-2019) was a British historian and biographer who became a fellow of St John's College, Cambridge and later Professor of History at the University of Essex. He wrote a major work on the history of the USA as well as works on Kennedy, Arthur Ransome and Alexis de Toqueville. He stated that his sole recreational interest was collecting English epitaphs and wished his own to be 'Brexit wrecks it'. Spotting to a few pages, small holes on fore-edge of about thirty pages of Vol. 1 consistent with having been previously sewn Very slight spotting, otherwise very good indeed.
