Reprint (the first edition was in 1788). vi, 72pp. and 38 multi-image hand coloured numbered plates, drawn and engraved by F. P. Nodder. Thomas Martyn (1735-1825) was an English botanist and Professor of Botany at Cambridge University, and lectured on the Linnaean system. He writes in his preface to this book that "These plates, with their explanations, may be considered as an entire work: but it is presumed that they will be much more satisfactory when studied jointly with the letters [Letters on the Elements of Botany by Jean-Jacques Rousseau]). The book is bound in contemporary full leather boards with gold titling on a leather label and gold decoration on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with wear to the leather on the tips of the top corners, rubbing down the spine edges and a small bit of damage to the leather on the top front spine corner. About 1/8" of the left side of the title label is missing and the leather below the missing piece has been stained black to make the loss less visible. The contents are tight and clean and the plates remain bright. There are a few small and light foxing marks and some of the pages of descriptive text show some offsetting from the facing plate. A name has been neatly written on the top corner of the second front free endpaper.

An early edition; vi, 72 pages + 38 hand colored plates, drawn and engraved by F P Nodder. 230mm x 140mm (9 x 6 inches): Thomas Martyn [1735-1825] was Professor of Botany at the University of Cambridge; F. P. Nodder was a botanical painter to Queen Charlotte and was associated with Sir Joseph Banks. Boards detached and worn, spine strip almost entirely gone, early ownership signature, light staining and foxing, etc. in places, otherwise good overall condition with bright 18th c. coloring to all 38 plates. With Scientific Characters, Popular Descriptions, and Useful Observations, London: F. P. Nodder (1792-94). First Edition, four volumes bound as two. Green half leather with marbled boards. Embossed floral border around leather caps and spine. Tooled spine with gilt borders and red gilt lettered Morocco labels with title and Vol. no. All edges marbled mirroring board papers. The complete suite of 144 full colour engravings all present, with both plate number 14 and plate number 15 marked as plate 14 in plate, but different illustrations, and the text of plate 29 marked as plate 26, an original printing error. Two pages have small discrete tears not affecting the plates. Occasional spotting and browned pages, but plates are bright and clean. A remarkable complete set of Nodder's plates described by Martyn, a fellow of the Royal Society, the Linnĉan Society and professor of botany at Cambridge.

Nodder not only published these works, but was the botanic painter to her majesty and King George III. .Plants drawn and engraved also by Frederick P. Nodder. .Contains marbled decorative covers. .Each flower and/or plant has its own multi-page description and/or short story. .Each volume has its own index of Latin and English floral names. Please check the photos and ask questions. Condition: "GD-(Good Minus)All 4 volumes have splitting up and down the bindings and spine. Front cover of volume one is slightly loose, but all covers are intact. Covers and boards have moderate to heavy staining and/or soiling. There is also corner bumping and blunting. Also has some chips and scuffs at top of bindings. Boards and endpapers have heavy amounts of staining and foxing. They also have some creasing, scuffing, bubbling, and dimples. Pages are mostly off-white with moderate amounts of staining and/or foxing. Overall, the book retains acceptable presentation.".
