Sachant qu à cette époque, la France et la Grande-Bretagne rivalisent dans le domaine maritime, Mallory charge quelques-uns de ses officiers d y acheter ou d y faire construire des croiseurs issus des plus récentes technologies navales. Le capitaine James D. Bulloch se révéla le plus efficace des officiers confédérés envoyés en Europe, mais aussi le plus connu parce qu il réussit à lancer le célèbre Alabama. L auteur avait déjà évoqué brièvement la carrière de cette corvette dans son ouvrage La Flotte européenne de la Confédération, primé en 2001 par l Académie de Marine française. Par la suite et grâce à l'intervention de feu Mme Ulane Bonnel, l ancienne présidente de la Commission française d'Histoire maritime et de l'Association C.S.S. Alabama, Serge Noirsain a été autorisé à rencontrer les plongeurs français et américains au cours de leurs fouilles sur l'épave de l Alabama. Le 23 septembre 2004, en présence des personnalités administratives et politiques de la ville, des représentants américains du Civil War Preservation Trust ont décerné à Cherbourg le titre de site officiel de la guerre civile américaine, le seul site de ce conflit, répertorié en Europe. L intérêt de l auteur pour cette période de l histoire des États-Unis trouve son origine dans les aventures de deux de ses ancêtres qui furent les contemporains des événements relatés dans cet ouvrage : le premier dans l armée fédérale américaine pendant la guerre dite de sécession, le second dans le corps expéditionnaire belge au Mexique, de 1864 à 1867.
