Octavo, navy blue cloth (hardcover), silver lettering, x, 374 pp. Fine (As New) in a Fine (As New) dust jacket. From dust jacket: No general in American history has been more libeled and vilified than Benjamin Franklin Butler. In the copious Civil War literature, Butler is routinely slighted or slandered -- sometimes both in a single paragraph. Wartime lies and political smears have persisted for more than a century. But, judged by the ample record, the man the South called "Beast" was in truth one of the greats of his time -- and one of the most compassionate. It was Butlers whose efforts safeguarded Washington when, at the outset of war, the nation's capital was isolated and threatened. It was Butler who tamed the MAryland secessionists and held that state securely for the Union. And it was Butler, at Fortress Monroe in Virginia, who strengthened and held that key post on the flank of the Confederacy, a constant threat to Richmond. From Fortress Monroe Bulter rescued thousands of Union soldiers from Confederate prisons and prison camps. IT was Butler who, perhaps even more than Lincoln, deserved the title of Great Emancipator. While Lincoln and the Congress dithered, Butler freed thousands of slaves by simply confiscating them as "contraband" and declaring them free. First at New OPRleans and later at Fortress Monroe Butler recruited regiments of black soldiers and taught them how to fight for the freedom of their people. In the finale, Butler's black regiments were the first to enter Petersburg and Richmond. Butler's genius as an administrator was shown brilliantly at New ORleans, where he fed the poor, erdicated crime, cleansed the city, and kept it fever-free. All this while, with limited resoureces, he held the city securely and expanded Federal control over the adjacent countryside. After the war, in Congress and as governor of Massachusetts, Butler campaigned ceaselessly for currency reform, a minimum wage law, universal civil rights, and women's suffrage, among other liberal causes. As an attorney he was conceded to be at the top of his profession. And where Lincoln spoke of "charity for all," Butler practiced it, extending frequent help to former Confederates and their families. Butler's formidable intellect and unflagging vigor were downright frightening to most of his powerful contemporaries. He more than met the criterion set forth by Jonathan Swift: "When a true genius appears in the world, you may know him by this sign, that the dunces are all in confederacy against him." Like a great shaggy bear, Butler moved through life swatting some dunces and shaking off others, never slowing or swerving from his course. This biography does justice at last to the bear, and identifies most of the dunces. With 56 photos and 6 maps. American Biography, Civil War, War between the States, Military Biography, American History, U. S. History, United States History yslic.
