First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Very Good, plus some; see scans and description. Chicago: Educational Foundation for Nuclear Science,1975. The September, 1975 issue of The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, that being Volume 31, Number 7. The famous and historic Doomsday Clock - shown on each cover or title page since 1947, two years after the publication's inception - here shows the time to be nine minutes of midnight as of late 1975. Quarto, illustrated staple-bound wraps, 56 pp. Very Good; original addressee label on front cover, some light soiling to covers; inevitable page-toning within is moderate; no other flaws. A handsome example; see all scans. Established in 1945 by biophysicist Eugene Rabinowitch and physicist Hyman Goldsmith in response to a correctly-perceived demand for nuclear information at the time by the general public, The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists is without doubt the most historically significant non-technical publication on the subject of "'global security and public policy issues related to the dangers posed by nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction, climate change,[2] and emerging technologies and diseases". Hence, over the years, BAS has become a geopolitical instrument, rather than a nuclear watchdog alone. Feature articles in this vintage 1975 issue: Nuclear Violence; Lawrence Livermore Lab; UN Agencies; Reactor Safety; Uranium Tailings; NPT Review; more. See scan of contents. Contributors include Samuel H. Day Jr. (Editor); Paul R. Ehrlich; Stuart A. Rice; Herbert F.York; Joel Primack; Fred Finlayson; Norman Rasmussen; Robert Weatherwax; Herbert J.C. Kouts; Frank von Hippel; Hans Bethe; David Dinsmore Comey; William Epstein; et al. Very, very scarce as the original monthly softcover issue. Ships in a new, sturdy, protective box - not a bag. Seller: Singularity Rare & Fine, Baldwinsville, NY, U.S.A.
Magazine / Periodical First Edition
Original Printed Wrappers. Condition: Very Good. Walter Huber, Fred Herz, T.J. Hellman, Inez Mexia, William E. Colby, Joseph Dixon, H.P. Rankin, Frank H. Lewis, Philip S. Carlton, William H. Wright, Lee L. Stopple, Quong Jue, R.L. van Oosting (illustrator). First Edition. San Francisco: Sierra Club, 1925. First Edition. Vol XII, No. 2, for 1925. This was published during a several-year time period when the Sierra Club did not stipulate the month of an issue, just the volume, the number, and the year- monthly designations for such an infrequent publication having always been somewhat unnecessary in any case. Original printed wrappers, 9 1/4" x 6 1/4", 102 pp. + unpaginated photographic plates, features and ads, including a plate fold-out with two panoramic wide angles, from Mount Hamilton, by William H. Wright. Very Good plus, really quite close to near fine; the major flaw being the common one that circuit binding (yapp binding) was used, in which cover edges were intentionally extended out beyond page edges, but over time the extended part becomes pressed inward somewhat (see scan). One notable rear-cover chip at top, about 1" x 1.5". Otherwise, just occasional very small points of cover wear. A very handsome copy. See scans. Binding sturdy, contents fine. See scan of contents page for the lineup of stellar club writers and their always engaging and adventurous topics. In addition to the graphics mentioned above, this issue is chock full of photographic plates by the club's best photographers, as well as others. In addition to a serious passel of photos by Walter Huber and Fred Herz, there are photo contributions by T.J. Hellman, Inez Mexia, William E. Colby, Joseph Dixon, H.P. Rankin, Frank H. Lewis, Philip S. Carlton, William H. Wright, Lee L. Stopple, Quong Jue, R.L. van Oosting, and several uncredited. SC2.
