Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. With steel engravings (illustrator). 'One Hundred and forty-first Thousand'. Believed to be c. 1850. Large family bible with black decorative leather boards and gilt edged pages. Comprehensive notes to the text on each page of text. ILLUSTRATIONS: Pictorial half title page with a b/w steel engraving. Very many full page b/w steel engravings through the bible. In addition there are 2 fold out b/w maps at front and end of the 32 page section titled 'Geography of the Bible'. All illustrations are in particularly good condition. CONDITION: This bible has been professionally restored with the insertion of new front and rear cream end papers. The black leather boards with gilt decoration on front & rear boards and on the spine have been cleaned. The spine with gilt decoration has been repaired and reattached. The expensive renovation of this bible as been with the aim to be sympathetic to its antiquity and its individual character which has developed over its long history. PAGES: Preface & Introduction: 4 pages. Overview of the biblical books: i - xx. Contents: A second section giving an overview of the Old & New Testaments: xxi - xxvii. Main text with Old Testament, 1144 pages; New Testament, 460 pages. CONDITION: All pages are securely bound in. Bright, clean unmarked text throughout with no inscriptions. The copious background notes are in one or two central columns on each page and at the base of each one. The bible is in a tidy state, having a clean, attractive appearance. By far the majority of pages are free from brown discolouration and brown spotting. A very few pages with text are affected. This is a scarce copy and is of particular note. In is unusually heavy.
