Hardcover. Condition: NF. Dust Jacket Condition: NF. Photos, Maps (illustrator). 1st. Today jet airliners cross the Pacific non-stop --- a far cry from the earliest passenger services over its vast breadth. These were operated by Pan American, using large flying boats with intermediate bases required on the routes to the Far East and south west to New Zealand. Pan Am pioneered services during the late 1930s/early '40s with the Pacific War preventing their full development, although the bases developed were to be important to the US during the conflict. Remote Canton Island was one of the Pan Am bases and the author was stationed there following WWII by the airline. His extremely interesting book traces the history of early flights across the Pacific, the concept and development of commercial routes, the impact of war and the subsequent rapid progress made in airline services. He traverses the history of the island, the people who lived there, visited it, the wild life and environment, the incidents and losses, with many anecdotes giving it a lively personal touch. A well produced and scarce book, meriting inclusion in any aviation library. The publisher specialises in aviation literature. 228 pages including bibliography, references, index, numerous b/w photos. 12 maps. Purple hard covers with gilt spine titles NF, ownership stamp with tiny ink gift note above top corner FFEP, text block otherwise NF. DJ is NF with colour map on white background at front, not price clipped.
