This report addresses the characterization of measurements that include epistemic uncertaintites in the form of intervals. It reviews the application of basic descriptive statistics to data sets which contain intervals rather than exclusively point estimates. It describes algorithms to compute various means, the median and other percentiles, variance, interquartile range, moments, confidence limites, and other important statisitics and summarizes the computability of these statistics as a function of sample size and characteristics of the intervals in the data. The report explores the tradeoff between measurement precision and sample size in statistical results that are sensitive to both. Very good. Cover has slight wear and soiling.

Scott Ferson is Chair of Uncertainty at the University of Liverpool, School of Engineering, in the Institute for Risk and Uncertainty. He was for many years previously senior scientist at Applied Biomathematics, a research firm on Long Island in New York. He holds a Ph.D. in ecology and evolution from Stony Brook University and an A.B. in biology from Wabash College. He has over 100 peer-reviewed papers and 5 books on risk analysis and related topics. For over twenty years, he has directed methodological research in risk and uncertainty analysis. His recent research work, funded primarily by NIH, NASA and Sandia National Laboratories, has focused on developing methods and software to solve quantitative assessment problems when data are poor or lacking and structural knowledge about the model is severely limited. He has served on many expert panels called by government agencies in the United States and elsewhere. This report summarized methods used to incorporate information about inter-variable dependence into risk assessments that use Dempster-Shafer theory or probability bounds analysis to address epistemic and aleatory uncertainty. The report reviews techniques for simulating correlated variates for a given correlation measure and dependence model, computation of bounds on distribution functions under a specified dependence model, formulation of parametric and empirical dependence models, and bounding approaches that can be used when information about the inter-variable dependence is incomplete. The report also reviews several o f the most pervasive and dangerous myths among risk analysts about dependence in probabilistic models. The Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), managed and operated by the National Technology and Engineering Solutions of Sandia (a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International), is one of three National Nuclear Security Administration research and development laboratories. In December 2016, it was announced that National Technology and Engineering Solutions of Sandia, under the direction of Honeywell International, will take over the management of Sandia National Laboratories starting on May 1, 2017. Their primary mission is to develop, engineer, and test the non-nuclear components of nuclear weapons. The primary campus is located on Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico and the other is in Livermore, California, next to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. It is Sandia's mission to maintain the reliability and surety of nuclear weapon systems, conduct research and development in arms control and nonproliferation technologies, and investigate methods for the disposal of the United States' nuclear weapons program's hazardous waste. Other missions include research and development in energy and environmental programs, as well as the surety of critical national infrastructures. In addition, Sandia is home to a wide variety of research including computational biology, mathematics (through its Computer Science Research Institute), materials science, alternative energy, psychology, MEMS, and cognitive science initiatives. Sandia formerly hosted ASCI Red, one of the world's fastest supercomputers until its recent decommission, and now hosts ASCI Red Storm, originally known as Thor's Hammer. Sandia is also home to the Z Machine. The Z Machine is the largest X-ray generator in the world and is designed to test materials in conditions of extreme temperature and pressure. It is operated by Sandia National Laboratories to gather data to aid in computer modeling of nuclear weapons.

Wraps. Presumed first edition/first printing. Includes illustrations. Various paginations, approximately 200 pages. References. Figures. Tables. Relationships to determine the probability that a weak link (WL) strong link (SL) safety system will fail to function as intended in a fire environment are investigated. From Wikipedia: "A strong link/weak link and exclusion zone nuclear detonation mechanism is a type of safety mechanism employed in the arming and firing mechanisms of modern nuclear weapons. The safety mechanism starts by enclosing the electronics and mechanical components used to arm and fire the nuclear weapon with a mechanical and electrical isolation barrier, forming the exclusion zone. This is insulated from mechanical, thermal, and electrical disruptions (such as static electricity, lightning, fire). Between the exclusion zone and the actual detonators, a normally disconnected link mechanism is used, such as a switch which has a built in motor to activate it. The arming system has to activate the switch in order to connect the firing circuits to the detonators in the weapon. This disconnection, which requires the arming mechanism to operate, is called the strong link. As a safety mechanism, a weak link is also built into the system. This is a set of components designed to fail at lower stresses (thermal, mechanical, and electrical) than will cause failure of the strong link mechanisms. These mechanisms do not prevent misuse of the weapon, or an accident from physically causing initiation of the explosives or detonators directly from extremely high temperatures, impact forces, or electrical disturbance such as lightning." Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Can you trust results from modeling and simulation? This text provides a framework for assessing the reliability of and uncertainty included in the results used by decision makers and policy makers in industry and government. The emphasis is on models described by PDEs and their numerical solution. Procedures and results from all aspects of verification and validation are integrated with modern methods in uncertainty quantification and stochastic simulation. Methods for combining numerical approximation errors, uncertainty in model input parameters, and model form uncertainty are presented in order to estimate the uncertain response of a system in the presence of stochastic inputs and lack of knowledge uncertainty. This new edition has been extensively updated, including a fresh look at model accuracy assessment and the responsibilities of management for modeling and simulation activities. Extra homework problems and worked examples have been added to each chapter, suitable for course use or self-study. This updated edition provides a framework for assessing the reliability and uncertainty of modeling and simulation results used in industry and government. With extra worked examples and homework problems for graduate students, and new material on topics including model accuracy assessment and management responsibilities for modeling activities.
