Die gemischte Aposteriori-Plansprache Volapük" (Weltsprache, die sich aus den englischen Wörtern world' und speak' zusammensetzt ) wurde um 1879 vom Konstanzer Pfarrer Johann Martin Schleyer (1831-1912) geschaffen und vorgestellt. Zu Beginn erwies sich die Kunstsprache als relativ erfolgreich, eine erste Grammatik erschien 1880 und im Laufe der Jahre gab es die ersten diplomierten Volapüklehrer. Trotz anfänglichem weltweiten Erfolg dieser Sprache ließ dieser im Laufe der Jahrzehnte immer mehr nach. Volapük ging vor allem an einem gewichtigen Fehler zugrunde, den es leider hatte: völliger Mangel an natürlichen Entwicklungsmöglichkeiten; mit jedem neuen Wort und jeder neuen Form war die Sprache ständig abhängig von den Beschlüssen einer Person oder einer leicht in sich zerstrittenen Gruppe von Personen.
