Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 20 cm. 40 pages. A son's biography of his father's early years in Minnesota. Dillon O'Brien was born in Ireland and died in St. Paul in 1882. With his comfortable life swept away by the potato famine of the 1840's, he and his family moved to Detroit and then to Madeline Island, where he became friends with Father Baraga and taught at the mission school there. In 1863 he moved to St. Paul, Minnesota and resided there for the rest of his life. He there became friends with Bishop Ireland, and was active in Ireland's efforts to bring more Irish to Minnesota. Quite rare. His son, the author, served on the Minnesota Supreme Court and was one of the founders of what became the William Mitchell College of Law. Signed by Thomas O'Brien on the front free end paper. Signed by Author(s).
