paperback. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that… encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Britannia Mews by Margery Sharp. Boston: Little, Brown & Company, 1946. Seventh Printing, issued the same year as the first edition. Octavo, red cloth boards with gilt spine lettering and Sharp's decorative endpapers. Original 1946 dust jacket ($2.75) pre…sent. A mid-century novel by Margery Sharp, Britannia Mews follows Adelaide Culver's defiant break from her conventional family and her life among the inhabitants of the rundown Victorian mews that bears the book's title. Blending humor, social observation, and a story spanning generations, Sharp gives readers a memorable cast of characters and a rich depiction of London's class and domestic worlds. This printing includes the classic jacket art by John O'Hara Cosgrave II, published concurrently with the book's early reprint sequence. Condition: Book: Very Good. Clean, sound red cloth with only light rubbing at extremities; binding tight and pages clean with typical mid-century toning. No writing inside except for a small, lightly penciled number on the front endpaper. Endpapers show expected offsetting from the jacket flaps. Dust Jacket: Fair to Good. Original 1946 jacket retains its $2.75 price and full artwork. Features chipping at spine ends, edge wear, small losses, and age toning, but remains complete. Notably, the jacket flaps have been adhered to the front and rear pastedowns - an artifact of mid-century remainder and wholesaler handling. Stated Seventh Printing on the front flap. Copyright page reflects the rapid early reprint history: 'Published June 1946. Reprinted June 1946 (four times), July 1946, August 1946 (twice).' This copy corresponds to the August 1946 reprint, making it an early but non-first edition. Provenance Note: This copy includes multiple stamped markings from The Remington-Putnam Book Co. of Baltimore, a mid-century book wholesaler and remainder distributor. Such stamps were typically applied to remaindered or discounted stock for inventory control and to prevent unauthorized returns. While not unusual in the 1940s-50s remainder trade, they provide an interesting glimpse into period book-selling practices and add a small piece of retail history to this copy. Margery Sharp (1905-1991) was an acclaimed English novelist and storyteller known for her wit, incisive character work, and talent for blending social comedy with emotional depth. She published more than twenty novels for adults, including Cluny Brown and Britannia Mews, both of which became international bestsellers. Sharp later achieved worldwide fame for her children's books, most notably The Rescuers, which inspired the celebrated Disney films. John O'Hara Cosgrave II (1908-1968) was an American illustrator and designer known for his prolific work in mid-20th-century publishing. He created dust jacket art for major houses including Little, Brown; Random House; and Houghton Mifflin, contributing to the visual identity of many bestsellers of the 1930s through 1950s. Cosgrave's style is recognized for its strong composition, expressive line work, and ability to convey character and mood with economy and elegance. His jackets, including the one for Britannia Mews, are now appreciated by collectors for their classic mid-century aesthetic and association with key literary titles of the era. Jacket Art by John O'Hare Cosgrove, II (illustrator).
