Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Laird was the founder on the famous shipbuilders of Birkenhead, the Scottish merchant was a pioneer of British trade on the River Niger. Laird's commercial expedition between 1832 and 1834 to navigate the Niger and initiate trade between Europeans and Africans northwards of the coast was considered a failure and the majority of the passengers aboard the three vessels died and only a small amount of trade materialised. However his experiences proved invaluable both in future exploration and trade and especially in boat design for travel on the Niger. Includes a map and 6 engraved plates. Rebound in quarter leather at spine with marbled paper covered boards to remainder. Small imprint to title page of both volumes. Red page edges. Pages a little yellowed with some dakend at top edge. Creasing to upper corner of page 379 and several following pages of Vol.I. 898pp. Light fade to leather of spine. Very slight rubbing to corners of papered boards.
