Cloth. Condition: Very Good. None (illustrator). The first abridged edition of this fascinating and collection of religious and political tracts, edited by Dr Johnson and William Oldys. First abridged edition of this collection of the material taken from the library of Robert Harley, 1st Earl of Oxford and his son Edward Harley, 2nd Earl of Oxford, consisting largely of seventeenth and early eighteenth century religious and political pamphlets. Originally published between 1744 and 1753, the publisher's advertisement to the start of this work explains that this abridged edition 'contains on quantity one sixth of the Miscellany', with the price being 'only one-twelfth of what the original work now falls for'. The personal library of Robert Harley and his son collected and preserved literature from many different eras, including the Renaissance, Anglo-Saxon and Middle English. Their combined collection, known as the Harleian Collection, is now held by the British Library. Compiled and edited by Samuel Johnson, often called Dr Johnson, an English writer who made lasting contributions as a poet, playwright, essayist, moralist, literary critic, sermonist, biographer, editor, and lexicographer, and William Oldys, an English antiquarian and bibliographer. Retaining the original single page of publisher's advertisements to the rear. Bound in full modern cloth. Externally, excellent with library stickers to the tail of the spine and the rear board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting throughout and minor age toning to the extremities. Library ink stamp and blind stamp to the title page. With library bookplate to the pastedowns. Additional ink stamps to the pastedowns and the reverse of the title page. Very Good. book.

Hardcover. 8vo. Half calf with raised bands (and modern paper label) and marbled paper over boards. (6pp), 488pp. Good plus. Though internally very good -- tight, clean, nice -- and with calf spine buffed and attractive, the marbled paper boards are quite rubbed and edgeworn. Decent first edition of the first volume (only) of this five-volume set. When Edward Harley, 2nd Earl of Oxford, died in 1741, bookseller Thomas Osborne hired antiquarian and bibliographer Oldys (1696-1761), the not-yet-renowned "Dr. Johnson" (1709-84) and French scholar/bibliographer Maittaire (1668-1747) to compile this massive bibliography of the noted English nobleman, politician and bibliophile. Published entirely in Latin, except for Johnson's "An Account of the Harleian Library" in the first volume. Boswell remarks that Johnson also contributed the commentaries about the books, and the good doctor may have written the preface to the third volume as well. Johnson biographer John Hawkins, in the first biography of Johnson penned after his death (1787) states that Johnson penned all of the third and fourth volumes. Whatever the case, what is offered here is the volume with Johnson's undisputed contribution, one of his earlier appearances in print.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. [viii], 8, 488; xx, 489-1034; xvi, 408; [vi], 409-858 pp.; 8vo, modern quarter tan calf with new end leaves, five raised bands, tan cloth sides, gilt titles, uncut. This huge library was formed by Robert Harley, first Earl of Oxford and was continued by his son, Edward, the second Earl (1689-1741). Edward s widow sold the library to London bookseller Thomas Osborne, who then engaged Samuel Johnson and the antiquary William Oldys to catalogue the collection. Johnson and Osborne were often at odds, and thus Johnson s contribution to this work ended with vol. 2. These four volumes list over 36,000 printed books, plus a number of bound books of prints, as well as drawings (vol. 2). It took Osborne twenty years to dispose of the books, which were sold in installments at fixed prices. Vol. 1 includes Johnson s "An Account of the Harleian Library" (which had just appeared in the December 1742 issue of The Gentleman's Magazine) and a dedication by Michael Maittaire. Vol. 3 includes "Proposals for Printing, by Subscription, the Harleian Miscellany"; "An Account of this Undertaking"; and "Index capitum: or Tables of the Heads." Advertisements and announcements for books available (or to be available) for sale by bookseller T. Osborne can be found in vols. 1, 2 and 4. Vols. 2 and 4 are continuously paginated from vols. 1 and vol. 3, respectively, and include a separate title page. A fifth volume that was issued in 1745 largely re-catalogues books from the first four volumes that remained unsold, and is not present here. A rare and important catalogue. Some of the edges a little dusty, but overall, a clean, well-preserved, uncut and attractive copy. Bookplate of the Law Society on ffep of each volume (no other ex-library markings). Breslauer & Folter, Bibliography, 102.
