[From back cover] Omaha Beach to this day carries the scars of that remarkable battle on June 6th and 7th, 1944. Overlooking the beach is the Cemetery, bearing witness to the sacrifice of the large number of American soldiers who, on those two days, with almost incredible bravery and perseverance, overcame the fierce German resistance on the high ground. The ebb and flow of the battle mirrored the ebb and flow of the tides on that wide open beach, a beach that, at times, was strewn with the dead and wounded of those courageous young Americans. The landing on Omaha was part of the beginning of the outcome of the war in the west of France that was ultimately to lead to the defeat of Germany in the following year. It is, justly part of American history as an example of the heroism of their young soldiers, many, many of whom now lie in peace forever in this land they came to liberate at such great cost.
