First Edition
First edition, deluxe issue, number 102 of 250 copies printed on handmade paper. Omar Khayyám (1048-1131) first became known to the English-speaking world following Edward FitzGerald's translation of his Rubáiyát, first published in 1859. By the turn of the 20th century, there was a "cult of the Rubáiyát" which found expression in "the Omar Khayyám Clubs of England and America" (Yohannan, p. 202). This biography, written at the height of Khayyám's popularity, intended "to present the Life of Omar from the Persian standpoint" (p. vii). John D. Yohannan, Persian Poetry in England and America, 1977. Octavo. Original Japanese vellum, spine lettered in gilt, floral stamp and motto ("Soul is Form") to covers in blind, top edge gilt, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Title page and ornaments to text illustrated by hand in gold, red, and blue ink. Bookplate of Nell Rose Wheeler and Charles Van Cise Wheeler to front pastedown, library stamp to front free endpaper. A very good copy, spine slightly soiled and extremities a little rubbed, light browning to endpapers, contents clean and free from marks.
