Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket, as Issued. First Edition. First impression of the first US edition, published as a paperback original in 2000 in the John F. Byrne Irish Literature series. The book was originally published in hardback in the UK by Hart-Davis, MacGibbon in 1973. With a new Preface by Kevin O'Nolan, wh…o also edited the collection. ***Near fine in glossy card covers. Covers slightly creased. Slight abrasion to the fore-edge of the page block. Edges just very slightly creased. No reading creases to the spine. Internally near fine, with no annotations or inscriptions, and no tears. Pages clean and white. ***204mm x134mm. 189 pages. ***Contents: Preface, The First Article, Monologues and Dialogues, The District and Other Courts, Bores, Latin Corner, Requiem Writings, Criticism, Politics, Controversy, Debate, Two Stories. ***'Flann O'Brien adopted the name "Myles na Gopaleen" for the hilarious Cruiskeen Lawn column which he wrote for the Irish Times from 1940-1966. Whereas "The Best of Myles" covered the first five years of the column's life, this companion edition covers the period from 1947-1957. Here can be found the true transcripts of Myles's clashes with the law courts on charges of larceny, currency offenses, marrying without the consent of his parents, gang warfare, and using bad language; here too are bizarre obituaries, bores, banalities, jovialities and immoralities, and the return of the preposterous Brother. Also included is the first-ever Myles article.' (Quote taken from the back cover). ***A first impression of the first US edition, published as a paperback original, in nice collectable condition. This American edition is uncommon in the UK. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: good. First American edition. Hardcover in bright yellow paper covered boards lettered in black over black cloth spine lettered in yellow. States only "First published 1939" on copyright page but this, the first American edition, was actually published in 1951 by Pantheon. 316 p…p. A tight, bright example with a touch of soiling about the edges of the text block. In the original dust jacket, yellow printed in black, price of $3.00 intact. Jacket is evenly but materially soiled, very small chip lower front edge and very shallow wear along the top edge. The Irish author's first novel, it was published in London in 1939 (the true first is virtually unobtainable) and has been considered one of the top 20th century novels. Graham Green called it "A book in a thousand." and likened it to "Tristam Shandy" and "Ulysses". It is a sophisticated novel of a young Dublin literature student, told in the first person but with deals with three seperate, interwoven stories. The book's unusual tile is derived from the name of a ford on the River Shannon in Ireland.

Brian O'Nolan (1911-1966) was an Irish novelist, playwright and satirist, considered a major figure in twentieth century Irish literature. Born in Strabane, County Tyrone, he is regarded as a key figure in postmodern literature. His English language novels, such as At Swim-Two-Birds and The Third Policeman, were written under the pen name Flann O'Brien. His many satirical columns in The Irish Times and an Irish language novel An Béal Bocht were written under the name Myles na gCopaleen. At Swim-Two-Birds is widely considered to be O'Brien's masterpiece, and one of the most sophisticated examples of metafiction. It was originally published in 1939 by Longmns, but only sold around 240 copies before 1940, when Longman's London premises were destroyed during a bombing raid by the Luftwaffe and almost all the unsold copies were incinerated. Add to basket8vo., pp. 157; red publisher's cloth, stamped in gilt on spine; slight roll to spine, otherwise a near-fine copy in a mildly worn, near-fine, unclipped dust-jacket.First edition. A short comic novel described by O'Brien's biographer Anthony Cronin as 'a small masterpiece', The Hard Life recounts the turn-of-the-century doings of… a nameless narrator and the characters around him, with a remote, disdainful calmness and clarity. Set in the same turn-of-the-century Dublin as Joyce's Portrait of the Artist, it consists, as Cronin says, of a series of conversation pieces that are 'classics of pointless dialectic' a brand of comedy O'Brien's pseudonymous journalist, Myles na Gopaleen, spent years perfecting in his Irish Times column.Praised by the reviewers, The Hard Life's sales were disappointingly moderate. Graham Greene, who in 1939 had championed O'Brien's first novel, wrote to him: 'At Swim-Two-Birds has remained to my mind ever since it first appeared as one of the best books of our century. But my God, what a long time it has been waiting for the next one.'Quotations taken from The New York Review of Books, November, 1999.
