Founded in 1725 at the suggestion of John Anstis, Garter King of Arms, the chivalric order named after the medieval tradition of ceremonial bathi…ng proved a useful tool of patronage for then Prime Minister Robert Walpole, who even appointed himself and two family members to the 36 strong body. First printed in this format in 1725, with subsequent reprintings in 1726 and 1727, the format was switched to octavo (1744) before reverting back to the grander quarto presentation for the 1772 edition and all later issues. OCLC and COPAC combined record copies at just two locations (Erfurt and NMM), both erroneously catalogued as published in 1812 (likely due to the misleading imprint); the 1812 edition runs to 77pp, whereas the present edition contains an additional 5pp comprised of a declaration by George IV dated 1820. Worn, numerous old horizontal and vertical folds, partly torn away at foot with loss to docket title. ESTC records copies at two locations (BL and National Archives). ESTC T28985. The copy of Alexander Hood (1727-1814), later Lord Bridport, English naval hero, third in command at the Glorious First of June, together with the exceedingly rare ceremonial programme for his own installation into the Order at Westminster Abbey. An inscription in his hand to the rear endpaper suggests that Hood gave the book to his first cousin once removed Captain Alexander Hood (1758-1798): 'Mon. 21st of July 88. I Sir Alexander Hood acquaint Capt. Hood that he must have a ribband between the third and fourth button hole of his coat the colour of the Order. He supposes the ribband of his month will answer.'
