Literary works of the Irish-born journalist-author, many of the poems relating to the Civil War, to political or social issues "Woman's Rights" (p. 150) and those of a humorous nature including "An Olfactory Ode in Praise of New York Cleanliness". He, at one time, was editor of the"Carpet Bag," contributed and associated with several American newspapers, was private secretary for Stephen A. Douglas, became a General in the Civil War, assumed the conduct of "The Citizen" and founded the Democratic Union, was an active member of the Tammany Hall General Committee with Halpine bringing about the fall of Fernando Wood, "notorious as the organizer and leader of corruption in the city of New York." Wood was also Mayor of New York and a Member of the U. S. House of Representatives. The editor, Robert Barnwell Roosevelt (1829-1906), was an author and politician, a member of the Committee of Seventy which over threw the Tweed Ring, he was a member of the House of Representatives and later U. S. Minister to the Netherlands. He wrote several works on fishing and hunting and was the uncle of Theodore Roosevelt. Original purple cloth gilt. Early pencil inscription on front flyleaf dated 1882, tips of spine and corners are lightly rubbed, else a near fine copy, with the cloth and gilt decoration quite bright. Myles O'Reilly was born Charles Graham Halpine (1829-1868) in Co. Meath, Ireland, and he emigrated to America, becoming a successful newspaper journalist and editor. During the American Civil War he enlisted in the 47th New York Regiment, and also wrote articles about the War (under the pseudonym Miles O'Reilly).
