He designed sets for The Mermaid Theatre, St. George's Theatre and was the co-ordinator for the symposium for the reconstruction of The Globe Playhouse. In 1965 he was awarded the Kate Greenaway medal for illustration. He wrote numerous books on theatre - a number of which were on Shakespearean theatre. Numerous illustrations support the text.
