First Edition
No Binding. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Not a book but a group of three, 7-inch, 45 rpm "single" vinyl records from 1958. The Crests' "16 Candles," credited to Luther Dixon, COED CO-506, is very-good-plus to near-mint with some rub and a small PON to the red-and-black label. The Teddy Bears' "To Know Him, Is to Love Him," both sides credited to Philip Spector, on the pale blue Dore label, is Dore 45-503, near mint, while "Willie and the Hand Jive," sung by and credited to Johnny Otis, is purple label Capitol F3966, 45-18745, near-mint to the "A" side, very-good-plus with a sticker pull to label of B-side "Ring-A-Ling." Following graduation from Fairfax High School in Los Angeles, young Philip Spector convinced Era records to pony up $75 so he could take his vocal group, the Teddy Bears (Marshall Leib, Harvey Goldstein, lead singer Annette Kleinbard, and last minute recruit, drummer Sandy Nelson) into the studio to record his first song, "To Know Him, Is to Love Him." The record stayed in the Billboard Hot 100 for 23 weeks -- Number One for three weeks. At the age of 19, Phil Spector had written, arranged, played, sung, and produced the best-selling record in the country. It sold over two and a half million copies. Leib went on to join the Hollywood Argyles. As "Carol Connors," Annette Kleinbard went on to write the Rip Chords' "Hey Little Cobra" and the Academy Award-nominated Rocky theme song, "Gonna Fly Now." The year was 1958. Does anyone remember? Group of three 45 rpm vinyl "singles," for one price -- in fact, now reduced from $27.

Paperback. Condition: New. A rediscovered landmark in African American political and popular historyIn the summer of 1965, the Los Angeles neighborhood of Watts exploded in a race riot that spanned six days, claimed thirty-four lives, and brought America's struggle with racial oppression into harrowing relief. For Johnny Otis, "Godfather of Rhythm and Blues," the events of that summer would inspire one of the most compelling books to ever explore that fateful August in Watts. Originally published in 1968, Listen to the Lambs grew from a letter Otis wrote to an expatriate friend during the days following the riots. Otis moves back and forth between Watts and his own childhood to reveal an alternate history of the riots. Equal parts memoir, social history, and racial manifesto, Listen to the Lambs is a moving witness of collective turmoil and a people for whom the long-promised American Dream was nowhere to be found.

Paperback. Condition: New. British blues fan Mike Leadbitter launched the magazine Blues Unlimited in 1963. The groundbreaking publication fueled the then-nascent, now-legendary blues revival that reclaimed seminal figures like Son House and Skip James from obscurity. Throughout its history, Blues Unlimited heightened the literacy of blues fans, documented the latest news and career histories of countless musicians, and set the standard for revealing long-form interviews. Conducted by Bill Greensmith, Mike Leadbitter, Mike Rowe, John Broven, and others, and covering a who's who of blues masters, these essential interviews from Blues Unlimited shed light on their subjects while gleaning colorful detail from the rough and tumble of blues history. Here is Freddie King playing a string of one-nighters so grueling it destroys his car; five-year-old Fontella Bass gigging at St. Louis funeral homes; and Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup rising from life in a packing crate to music stardom. Here, above all, is an eyewitness history of the blues written in neon lights and tears, an American epic of struggle and transcendence, of Saturday night triumphs and Sunday morning anonymity, of clean picking and dirty deals. Featuring interviews with: Fontella Bass, Ralph Bass, Fred Below, Juke Boy Bonner, Roy Brown, Albert Collins, James Cotton, Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup, Joe Dean, Henry Glover, L.C. Green, Dr. Hepcat, Red Holloway, Louise Johnson, Floyd Jones, Moody Jones, Freddie King, Big Maceo Merriweather, Walter Mitchell, Louis Myers, Johnny Otis, Snooky Pryor, Sparks Brothers, Jimmy Thomas, Jimmy Walker, and Baby Boy Warren.
