Translation of La vision nocturne et ses troubles. xiv, 408 p. ill. INTRODUCTION One of the most outstanding monographs which has appeared since the World War?or indeed which has ever appeared in oph-thalmological literature?has been that written by Jayle and Our-gaud for the French Ophthalmological Society on Night Vision and Its Derangements. The subject is difficult, vague and chaotic, weighed down with theories and complicated by experimental work wherein different investigators have elaborated a multiplicity of instruments which measure, in a somewhat indiscriminate and often irresponsible manner, several different functions. This monograph is much more than the usual review?extraordinarily comprehensive although it is?but provides a critical assessment and an integrative judgment on a multitude of incompatible theories and inco-ordinated observations; it is invaluable as a source of information and a guide not only to the ophthalmologist but also to the physiologist. It is good that a work so unique in its sphere is to be condensed and translated into English by Dr. Baisinger and Dr. Holmes and extended by the authors. Such a step cannot fail to enhance its influence and it will be a valuable addition to English literature in a subject which, despite its theoretical and practical importance, has not yet received the attention it deserves. SIR STEWART DUKE-?LDER.
