J. H. Voss übersetzte die 'Metamorphosen' des Ovid in Hexametern, "aber nicht mehr in der seit Klopstock frei nachgebildeten und wie es ihm schien regellosen Form, die "jeder, der sechs zählen konnte", glaubte "abfinden zu können". Er suchte die antike Versgestalt in allen Nuancen wiederzugeben, nach ihren Regeln, und sich dem Original auch in der Wortbildung und Wortstellen so eng anzuschließen, daß seine Übersetzungen, je konsequenter er verfuhr, den Zeitgenossen immer befremdlicher, "undeutscher" vorkamen.
