The author paints a vivid picture of life on the frontier, chronicling the struggles and triumphs of the early settlers who braved the wilderness to build a new life. The book delves into the origins of each settlement, tracing their founding families and the communities that grew around them. We learn about the challenges of building homes and businesses in a remote, untamed land, the ways they overcame them, and how they adapted to their surroundings. The author explores the everyday lives of the settlers, their relationships with each other, and the development of civic institutions, including schools, churches, and cemeteries. The book also addresses the broader historical context of the time, placing Palatine within the ongoing westward expansion of the United States. It examines the role of the railroad in connecting the region to the wider world, and the impact of the Civil War on the community. The author sheds light on the hardships these early pioneers faced and the enduring spirit they showed in overcoming them, contributing to the fabric of a vibrant and lasting community. Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Cornelia (Mrs. A. G.) Paddock of Salt Lake City (1840-1898) was a leader of the Anti-Polygamy Society who appears to have authored three books that portrayed Mormons in an unfavorable light. This, her first book, is an anti-Mormon novel. It also contains an appendix in the rear with a history of Utah titled "Utah 1870-1881"; there is also a chapter on "Utah Today" and the author's "Notes of Reference." Original green cloth covers with black cover decorations, gilt spine lettering and blind stamped rear title. There is an elaborate old owner name on front paste-down dated 1885 New Berlin, Ohio. The covers are worn as are the extremities (corner tips, top and bottom of spine, edges), and the front inner hinge is starting. The contents are generally clean, but there is an occasional smudge and marginal stain. This is the true first edition, first issue according to Wright.
