Volume One in a series which eventually grew to five volumes. Limited edition of 275 copies, 255 which were available for sale. This copy is numb…er 76. Originally printed with an original Benson etching bound in as the frontispiece, this copy has had the original etching removed. The book is ex-library, with a library stamp to the inside covers, a card holder on the rear end page along with a bar code sticker. Bar code sticker also on front panel mylar. On the copyright page, there are library notations and a note that this copy was a gift from Mr. Pemberton Whitcomb, a summer resident of Cotuit. The relatively plain gray dust jacket has been protected in mylar and is well-preserved. There is a library sticker to the lower spine of the dust jacket. The mylar DJ protector is taped in four places to the faces of the covers. The bottom edges of the covers are worn to the boards. The pages are clean but all have dampstains at the binding gutter and extending to the top/bottom margins. No images are affected.Some pages are a bit damaged in the dampstained areas, having been stuck together and later separated, mostly in the index and rear end pages. The free end pages have foxing. Binding is tight. This copy is very serviceable with all images and text clean. An uncommon volume from the Benson series which displays well and would be a good completion for an incomplete set. The endsheets are lightly foxed and there are two ink initials with a date underneath on the flyleaf else the text is very good and clean. The original etching is in fine clean condition. Foreign postage extra on this large book. Signed by Illustrator(s).

Includes the the signed original etching as frontis- piece. The book is bound in jute spine over blue paper covered boards with the title in black on the front cover and on a cream paper label… on the spine. Covers have light soiling. Corners spine caps and edges are bumped with some fraying at the head of spine. There are a few spots of foxing in margins on the first two leaves, etching # 279 and 280 and on pp 98 and 99. Sprinkling of foxing on the edges. The tissue guard has two light tanned areas. The original etching is in pristine condition, pencil signed by Benson. Otherwise, the pages are clean, smooth and unmarked. Etchings in this volume were done in 1923-1928 and number 224-285. All illustrations are in black and white. Too large to ship outside of the United States. Please see alll images. The artist was an American ornithologist, Impressionist painter and etcher. Signed by Illustrator(s).

The uncommon jacket, printed on thin paper, is in good condition with some edge chipping with slight loss at corners; a few short closed tears and top quarter of rear dust jacket flap is missing. Still, a most presentable copy.

Vol. Three 1923, no. 455 of an edition of 525 (of which 475 for sale), with very good original dust jacket, slightly chipped to the head of the spine. Vol. Four 1929, no. 133 of an edition of 600 (of which 550 for sale), no dust jacket, spine a little rubbed and worn, hessian covering slightly chipped at the head/tail. Vol. Five 1959, no. 243 of an edition of 400 (of which 350 for sale), with very good to fine original dust jacket. All dust jackets now protected in clear removable archival sleeves. Contents of all volumes clean and tight., previous owner's name and address to the front end paper of vol. 4 otherwise no inscriptions. A very good set of four volumes. Size: 4to. Book.
