Desde la segunda mitad del siglo xix el ferrocarril fue considerado la panacea, que había de solucionar todos los problemas y permitir el desarrollo de los territorios por donde trascurrieran los nuevos caminos de hierro. En aquel contexto caracterizado por un cierto "delirio proyectista", Vinaròs tuvo su parte en función del nuevo puerto, que se construyó en su estructura básica entre los años 1866 y 1885. Sobre todo fueron numerosos los proyectos para conectar las tierras aragonesas con lo que era un punto de "ruptura de carga" en el litoral, para extraer los recursos minerales (principalmente el carbón); hubo otros intentos, también en sentido perpendicular a la costa, pero que no iban más allá de las tierras interiores del norte del País Valencià; asimismo, se quiso conectar nuestro puerto con el emergente territorio del delta del Ebro. El "famoso" Val de Zafán fue el único proyecto que contempló la doble conexión: con Aragón y con el delta; tal vez por eso fue el más deseado, que se prolongó en el tiempo durante ocho décadas y el único que se ejecutó casi completo y que, al fin, conectó Vinaròs con las tierras aragonesas. Las fechas que enmarcan la cronología del libro son 1863, el año de la primera proposición de ley que se presentó en las Cortes para solicitar la concesión de este ferrocarril con final en Vinaròs; y 1935, la fecha del último proyecto de prolongación del mismo Val de Zafán, entre Sant Carles de la Ràpita y nuestro puerto. Pero mientras tanto también hubo otros intentos (no todo fueron proyectos en un sentido estricto) para conectar el Puerto de Vinaròs con Utrillas, Montalbán, Monreal del Campo, Ojos Negros, Caspe, Castellote, La Puebla de Híjar, Alcañiz, La Tinença de Benifassà, Benicarló, Sant Mateu, Forcall, Morella y Amposta.
