Early 20th-century half Swedish tan calf, marbled boards, gilt; spines uniformly faded, lower hinge of volume one cracked. FIRST EDITION of the first Swedish colour plate botanical colour-plate book. "Known as the 'Swedish Sowerby', this work was 'ESTEEMED BY CONTEMPORARIES AS AN ENTERPRISE OF NATIONAL IMPORTANCE'. 'Palmstruch's own illustrations, in the first six volumes, have been characterised as the best pictures of plants ever produced in Sweden and make this one of the most beautiful of Swedish books'. Stockholm, C. Delén et al., 1802-1829. Lex8vo. Bound in 10 excellent, uniform half calf bindings from ca 1900, by the great Swedish book binder G. Hedberg, in pastiche style with richly gilt spines and gilt top edges, otherwise uncut. Spines a little faded, but a beautiful set with all 720 hand-coloured engraved plates. Beautiful set of the first edition of the first Swedish colour-plate book on flowers and plants, often characterized as "The Swedish Sowerby". Palmstruch had learned drawing from Desprez and planned his magnificent work using Flora Danica and Sowerby's English Botany as models. The work was "esteemed by contemporaries as an enterprise of national importance. Palmstruch's own illustrations, in the six first volumes, have been characterized as the best pictures of plants ever produced in Sweden, and make this one of the most beautiful of Swedish books" (Lindberg, Swedish Books). An 11th (and final) volume was planned to appear later, but as a fire in the printing house (in May 1840) destroyed most of the stock of the last published parts before distribution (54 plates in all), this final unfinished and mostly destroyed 11th volume is hardly ever found together with the 10 volumes that were completed. Ryggarna nċgot nötta, titeletiketterna lite mer, rygghuvudet till del 2 med lagning, yttre falsen lite skadad upptill. Nċgra blad med smċ marginalskador, nċgra planscher lite bruntonade, enstaka fläckar men huvudsakligen ändċ ett bra exemplar. Medbundet i början av detta exemplar finns Quensel: Utkast till elefantens naturalhistoria. Med tvċ planscher av Palmstruch, den ena kolorerad. Medbundet finns ocksċ ett reklamblad "Avertissement" för uppvisandet av den första levande elefanten i Sverige. Den tillhörde Jean Baptiste Gautiers menageri och visades pċ Brunkebergsplan mot en avgift av 32 skilling.

Two volumes in elegant, well-preserved dark brown late 20th-century calf with richly gilt spines and brown morocco labels. Boards gilt ruled, board edges decorated in blind. Yellow edges. Minor scratches on rear board of first volume. Occasional spotting. A few plates slightly browned. Plate 21 "Grċbrun fjällorm" and its first textpage with dampstains. Plates and texts 3-6 misbound. Illegible signature in the first volume. A magnificent copy.Nissen Die zoologische Buchillustration 3259. All published. The 72 sections of "Svensk zoologi" are bound in numerical order, while the pagination follows the planned six parts, which otherwise were: "ett däggdjur, en fċgel, ett kräldjur, en fisk, en insekt och ett 'mask-kräk' [a mammal, a bird, a reptile, a fish, an insect and a worm]". The collation here is, for the sake of simplicity, compiled after these parts. Please note that there are still irregularities in the pagination, most likely because of the extended period of publishing and misunderstandings when the text was set up in type. The work with "Svensk zoologi" had been started by G. J. Billberg and the publishing model with a large number of instalments was the same as for "Svensk botanik". The first nine parts were published under the leadership of Palmstruch, until his death in 1811. Parts 10, 11 och 12 were published in 1813, 1818 and 1825, respectively. The year on the title page of the second volume is however 1809. Conrad Quensel wrote the first texts but passed away during the first year of publishing, and his task was taken over by Olof Swartz. A third volume was planned but never published.
