The leaders of its independent city-states intervened militarily in struggles among the European powers to its north and west but also against the expanding Muslim empires to its south and east. Italian culture supported military innovation, developing (for instance) new fortifications and naval organizations. After centuries of division, which limited Italy's power against the larger, unified European nations, the military played an important role in the nationalist unification of the entire country. Rapid industrialization followed, and along with it Italy's forays into overseas colonialism. L' Italie est devenue entre la fin du XIXe siècle et 1936 une puissance coloniale : ses dirigeants successifs souhaitaient lui rendre la Méditerranée, la Mare Nostrum de la Rome antique. La conquête de l empire fut lente et difficile mais, en 1936, l empire incluait une partie de l Afrique de l Est, la Libye et des possessions en Chine. L engagement de l Italie aux côtés de l Allemagne dans le second conflit mondial entraîna en moins de quatre ans la perte de ce qu un demi-siècle de guerres avait permis de conquérir. Ce livre décrit cet aspect de l histoire italienne assez peu connu en France et ses conséquences sur la place de l Italie au sein du « club des grandes puissances » durant la première moitié du XXe siècle. Il s attache aux développements militaires mais aussi diplomatiques de la conquête lente et de l effondrement brutal d un empire.

Il vuoto di potere politico e l'asservimento dell'Italia a potenze straniere provocò, come è noto, un'emorragia continua in uomini e ricchezze, protrattasi per almeno tre secoli e mezzo, fino al 1860, la cui quantificazione in termini di vite umane e di ricchezze perse è assolutamente impossibile. Se l'Italia uscì da tale situazione lo si deve esclusivamente all'iniziativa di Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia, proseguita poi dai suoi successori e basata sull'impiego di un opportuno strumento militare. Questo lavoro evidenzia, attraverso l'operato militare, cosa i Savoia fecero e come lo fecero, specialmente sul campo di battaglia, per raggiungere l'unità d'Italia.
