Original leather spine with four raised bands and gilt title: "Holy Bible". Gilt and gauffered page edges. Marbled endpapers. Inner hinges carefully stre…ngthened. Soiled printed title within double ruled border. Clean English text throughout in double columns, with only light soiling from age and previous use. New testament titl-page also dated 1848. Bound with: "The Psalms Of David. Approved By The Church Of Scotland. Edinburgh.1848." A rare example of papier mache binding and gauffered decoration. Referenced and dated via: Bibliography Book of Common Prayer by D.N.Griffiths 1848/2 ** Victorian Gothic Revival "Papier Mâché" Binding, Sunday October 4th, 2009, by Paul Watson: One of the fashions of the "Gothic Revival" during the mid-1840s to 1860s was for "monastic" style bindings that imitated the Medieval wooden book covers. Rather than reproducing these in wood, the Victorians (presumably for reasons of cost and mass production) recreated this style with Plaster of Paris and a filler (possibly papier-mâché and antimony?), which was then formed in a rigid frame usually made of metal. Another source suggests they were made from "fibrous plaster and paper pulp reinforced with metal". I suspect some more research is needed on my part! The technique was patented by the British firm J. Jackson & Son. Print runs of over 1000 were needed to offset the expense of producing the complex molds, according to bookbinding historian Bernard Middleton. From what I can find out, the technique seems to be especially associated with the British illustrator and illuminator Henry Noel Humphreys (18101879). Humphreys was influenced by his study of medieval manuscripts during a stay in Italy as a young man. The finished results have been described as resembling "nothing so much as cast iron" (Bookbinding in the British Isles: sixteenth to the twentieth century, Part 2. London: Maggs Bros. Ltd., 1996) .

Embossed, pierced and moulded black relief plaque in black papier mache over red papered boards (imitating carved ebony), with a few small cracks and early repairs. Professionally rebacked in matching black leath…er. Spine with gilt title: "History Of Writing". All page edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Illustrated with 28 full-page plates, many lithographed in colours by Day & Son, and many figures in the text. A well preserved copy of this scarce book. **"Henry Noel Humphreys (18101879), graphic artist and author, was born on 4 January 1810 in Birmingham, the son of James Humphreys and Dorothy Ann Knowles. He was educated at King Edward VI's Grammar School, Birmingham, and received artistic training in Brussels. After his marriage in 1833 he and his wife embarked upon a continental tour, the Italian portion of which inspired in Humphreys a keen admiration for the Italian Renaissance and baroque that stayed with him all his life. He also wrote about architectural materials and expressed radical sympathy for functionalism and engineering. *** Full Title reads: "The origin and progress of the art of writing : a connected narrative of the development of the art, its primeval phases in Egypt, China, Mexico, etc; its middle state in the cuneatic systems of Nineveh and Persepolis, to its introduction to Europe through the medium of the Hebrew, Phnician, and Greek systems, and its subsequent progress to the present day / by Henry Noel Humphreys, illustrated by a number of specimens of the writing of all ages, and a series of facsimiles from autograph letters from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century.".
