Eugène Atget (1857-1927) took several thematic series of Paris photographs from 1897-98 until the outbreak of war and then again afterwards. These included topographical views and architectural details, street scenes and markets and decorative details, including balconies, grilles, door knockers and trade signs. Towards the end of his career he was adopted, against his will, by the Surrealists. This collection includes sections on street traders, Old Paris stairs, shops and window displays, shanty town dwellers, houses of pleasure, fairs, the outskirts and parks and castles.
