SIGNED. Cid Corman, editor of Origin roughly 1950-2003, almost always read a book with pen in hand. Cid also almost always signed all of his personal books from his library and dated when receiving or purchasing the book. Cid also often would note, if a gift, and who had sent the gift -- many times another poet. His personal books range from heavy annotation from Cid where he often in unique marginalia would correct the author, agree with the author, argue with the author and leave it to Cid the often ultimate proofreader to correct the publisher. Close to fine and bright glossy wraps with strong spine and with crisp bright text throughout. In this case, annotated here and there by Cid Corman.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Offering: Kenneth Patchen. Poemscapes. Highlands, NC: Johnathan Williams, 1958. Limited edition. 68 of 75 created by Patchen. Good+ in hand-painted boards that show some wear from handling -- probably Patchen's as he created it. Previous owner's name, as well as an interesting gift inscription. See the extended book description below. By the late 1950s, Kenneth Patchen had moved beyond the printed word and into a deeply personal, visual form of poetry. Confined to bed by worsening spinal injuries, Patchen began painting directly onto books wild, joyful, and deeply strange expressions that fused image and verse into a kind of illuminated manuscript for the atomic age. These painted books became his most intimate works: not mass produced, not repeatable, not replicable. With every stroke and figure, Patchen rejected commercialism, embraced the handmade, and elevated his artists' books into a medium of protest, prayer, and play. His collaboration with publisher Jonathan Williams a fellow iconoclast, Black Mountain alum and founder of the Jargon Society gave us Poemscapes, a raw, unguarded volume of short poetic meditations as vivid as the artwork that would eventually accompany them. This is one of only 75 hand-painted copies of Poemscapes, each uniquely prepared, painted and signed by Patchen. The covers and endpapers have been transformed into a riot of color: swirling figures, surreal beasts, abstracted eyes, and bursts of shape that seem both childlike and cosmic -- as well as Patchen's hand-painted colophon: this copy being number 68. The binding and tops/bottoms of the painted boards show expected wear from its handmade origins, but the boards remain bold, textured, and vibrant. Very few of these painted Patchen books surface on the market, and each is one-of-a-kind. A true convergence of outsider art, poetry, and the book as an object of art. And here's where it gets interesting: the book's inscription on the FFEP by 'Margaret' (note previous owner's name "M. Hollenbach") to 'John & Chigiy', with the heartfelt note: 'knowing that the best of it was written for them.' The context suggests a meaningful association within the circle of Patchen or his collectors. It's worth noting that Patchen's hand-painted books were often sold directly to collectors, friends, or patrons. Signed by Author(s).

The front cover is stained and discolored in several places, but the watercolor of Egir is not affected. Likewise, the back cover is sun-tanned, discolored, and stained (just one place) - see images of this book to your left. The spine likewise has some discoloring. The slipcase is in generally very good condition: a small section of the upper portion is intact but torn away from the side. There is some shelf rubbing and chipping, particularly along the edges, but the text is still very clear on both front and back of the slipcase. From The Beat Page on the Internet : Kenneth Patchen was born in Niles, Ohio, in 1911. From the age of twelve, he kept a diary and read Dante, Homer, Burns, Shakespeare, and Melville. He attended Alexander Meiklejohn's Experimental College for one year and then the University of Wisconsin. He was employed in a variety of jobs as a migrant worker in the United States and Canada. "Permanence," a sonnet, was published in The New York Times on April 10, 1932. He wrote more than forty books of poetry, prose and drama, including Before the Brave (1936), First Will and Testament (1939) and Journal of Albion Moonlight (1941), a prose work. In 1942, he published The Dark Kingdom in a limited edition of seventy-five copies and painted each cover individually in water color. For more than thirty years, Patchen lived with a severe spinal ailment that caused him almost constant physical pain. The weight of this personal battle was compounded by his sensitivity to greater issues of humanity, and his poetry paid special attention to the horrors of war. With his work he tried to create a kind of sanctuary for the reader, apart from reality, where larger-than-life characters were motivated by their loving and benevolent natures. Kenneth Patchen died in 1972. Signed by Author(s).

Joel and Zoe Climenhaga, according to Miriam Patchen "Knew Kenneth Patchen's work better than anyone". In 1961 they originated TRANSIENT PRESS, when they published the first issue of Seed, a poetry magazine, under its imprint. Zoe Clinenhaga was its Co-Editor. During the greater part of the 1960's, other magazines (Jacaranda, Ferment, Rananim and Open Letter) were published through Transient Press. Later, during the 1970's and 1980's, other ephemeral poetry magazines and literary journals were published on an irregular basis under the editorship of the Climenhagas, these included Awakening, The Back Shelf Dispatch, Below Ground Level, Counsel for the Offense, Foundation, Greenage, Inner Dimension, Jonah's Gourd, Lighthouse in the Coming Storm, Noah and a variety of others. This letter was written to David Meltzer by Zoe complaining about his critique of material that Joel had sent him to read. Meltzer, an American poet and musician of the Beat Generation and San Francisco Renaissance, came to prominence with inclusion of his work in the anthology The New American Poetry 1945-1960. The note is typed on a single fold, 8 by 5" card published by Patchen Cards, with a poem and drawing by Patchen on it. This is an interesting little piece of Beat ephemera. ; Letters; B&W Drawing; Thin 8vo 8" to 9" tall; Signed by Author.
