The proprietor and editor of the periodical was Z. Paten Hatch; Associate Editor was Rev. E. S. Davis. The magazine was published at 9 Spruce Street, New York "The Christian Diadem and Family Keepsake" was a compendium of short pieces of prose and poetry that illustrated Christian morals and precepts. Some of the pieces are attributed to their authors or to other publications , and some remain anonymous . we can assume the pieces with no author were penned by one of the editors. This little magazine is most frequently found bound together with other issues into a single volume. Individual issues, such as that here offered, are seldom found as published, with their original wraps intact. TITLE : Christian Diadem and Family Keepsake ISSUE : Volume 1, number 4 (New Series) DATE : April 1854 EDITOR : Z. Paten Hatch (Zephaniah Paten Hatch, 1818 - 1874) IMPRINT : Z. Rarely Found As Issued, In Original Wraps CONDITION -- GOOD ONLY -- This is a previously owned item which is in rough, weathered condition, but serviceable - with the following particulars noted : EXTERIOR : Rough exterior. A bit soiled - moderate wear and weathering around edges, including a few small tears, creased corners etc. - small loss to top fore-edge corner -- moderate surface rub --scattered spotting and foxing -- a bit of small staining -- a penciled name on the rear exterior : Mrs. Eliz. Williamson BINDING : Solid - no leaves are loose or detached INTERIOR : Weathered around the edges - scattered foxing and spotting. a few smudges -- a small damp-stain displays at the bottom fore-edge corner--still despite the rough demeanor, the interior is basically clean and unmarked, with but small signs of use and time's passage. A ROUGH, BUT A FULLY INTACT SPECIMEN. Some things of interest in this April 1954 issue: *The front cover has a number of charming vignettes depicting favorite Bible stories. Such florid covers were typical for mid-century American publications. * The rear exterior of the wrapper features a promotion for "The Christian Diadem", which includes offers of Premiums : engravings of "The Marriage of Washington" or a portrait of Henry Ward Beecher. Encouragement was given to subscribers to bring in new subscribers by offering "Dowling's History of Romanism" - or selections from A SABBATH SCHOOL LIBRARY - or a novel, now obscure and forgotten: "Fanny Leslie, or Genius in Obscurity" (aptly titled). and down at the bottom: A WORD TO THE LADIES . Our Lady Friends [as many already have,] may effect much good by acting as [?] Agents for our magazine. We promise to give "THEM" extra inducements. . Z. PATEN HATCH, 9 Spruce-street, New York. * At the beginning of the issue is an engraved picture of "The Ruins of Tyre". there is no attribution for the print, which does not illustrate a particular article in the issue. These were often removed for framing. It is an exceptionally nice print, and in excellent condition. * The front interior of the wrapper has an advertisement for WATER'S PIANO AND MUSIC ROOMS on Broadway, New York. included are promotions for Gilbert's Boudoir Pianos, and for Smith's Melodeon and Goodman's Patent Melodeon "a New Invention" - the organ Melodeon with two banks of keys. On the rear interior of the cover: a full-page ad for THE NEW YORK WEEKLY SUN printed on MONSTER STEAM PRESSES -.
