"El pensamiento visual de Paternosto emerge a partir de esa paradoja: hay mundo porque hay línea, color, plano, secuencias articuladas en un ensamblaje preciso. Sin embargo, algo sucede que hace que la sutil presencia del aura vital destituya el sueño geométrico. Hay siempre en sus obras un punto de fuga, un espacio dominante que llama a su lado ciego. Sus trabajos son metáforas del ensueño geométrico anhelado, en el que late una dimensión animista que lo excede e impugna.La experiencia visual que plantea invita a descubrir, como todo gran arte, la interrogación por la presencia de las formas en el mundo. Pero, además, lleva a los límites la bidimensionalidad de la pintura, apostando a la deconstrucción de las convenciones pictóricas con una propuesta singular: al trabajar sobre los bordes del cuadro, opera un desplazamiento de sentido que indica un modo diferente de asumir la institución reglada del arte. En diversas ocasiones, el propio artista ha cifrado su trabajo en su experiencia de formación en la ciudad de La Plata: ciudad planificada por excelencia, diseñada en damero y diagonales, y que nombra a sus calles por la traza geométrica y la lógica de la numeración, que sustituye la ortodoxia de las citas históricas y los nombres propios. Para Paternosto, su ciudad natal es el modelo de un estilo de habitar el espacio pictórico y, a la vez, el secreto impulso conceptual de sus trabajos. Si el geometrismo que lo caracteriza abreva en el arte Madí (platense y contemporáneo de sus búsquedas iniciales), también lo hace en una experiencia fundamental: el encuentro con el arte prehispánico en el Museo de Ciencias Naturales de esa ciudad.
