The project's main focus was a cellar ruin interpreted to have been the site of a mid-eighteenth century Snuff and Tobacco Manufacture. The author presents archival data collected during the survey phase, and historical research conducted during the excavation phase which served to reinforce the hypothesis. Despite a lack of distinctive tools or architectural features associated with this activity, the author sought to identify the function of the cellar ruin as a Snuff and Tobacco Manufacture through extensive flotation samples and soil chemistry tests. The author posits that the most significant contribution of this work is to point out that it may not be possible to identify industrial activities of this type through the application of archaeological techniques. Through the application of several analytical techniques and the comparison of the results, the author offers a heuristic exercise to hone and refine analytical techniques. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Add to basketFirst edition in publisher's original colour illustrated card wrap covers [soft back]. 8vo. 7½'' x 5¼''. The emergence of British Airways, in the shape of it forerunner BOAC, after 1945 owed much to the wartime experience of RAF Transport Command. As the war dragged on, men and materials, until then carried by sea, increasingly took to the air in flights that spanned the world. Much of this development started during the North Africa campaign and the siege of Malta, both theatres of war in which ships were shown to be easy targets for aircraft and submarines. At the heart of it was Patrick Foss, then a young wing commander. Contains 251 printed pages of text with archive monochrome photographs throughout. In Very Good condition, no dust wrapper as issued.
