En hij was niet de enige dictator op dichterspad: 'En leidt haar met blij gemoed - want het uur komt dat je, huilend, haar voor 't laatst begeleiden moet!' dichtte Hitler over zijn moeder. Soms waren de gedichten een jeugdzonde, zoals bij Stalin, Hitler en Napoleon, soms vulden tirannen slim hun propaganda aan, zoals Pol Pot en Saddam Hoessein. Vaak verboog de dictator klassieke motieven naar een regimevriendelijke variant, zoals Nero, Mao Zedong en ayatollah Khomeini deden. En uiteraard was hun po?zie voor henzelf het zoveelste bewijs van hun genialiteit, zoals Ceausescu, de Turkmeense dictator T?rkmenbasy en de beide Noord-Koreaanse Kimmen bewezen. Een b??tje dictator is megalomaan. Naast massamoord, standbeelden en naar zichzelf vernoemde steden, bergen en waterkrachtcentrales, lijkt po?zie daarbij te horen. Paul Damen verzamelde deze gedichten en plaatst ze in deze bloemlezing in een historisch kader. Met een nawoord van Menno Wigman.
