A "colorful adventure story" designed for YA readers ("boys from 10-14") based on the true story of the barkentine Niantic, which was abandoned in San Francisco Bay in 1850 when her crew abandoned ship to go dig gold at Sutter's Fort. In 219 pages, with illustrations by M. de V. Lee opening each chapter & spanning the title page & pages 180-181. A FIRST EDITION, first printing, from 1939, this octavo (6" x 8.75") has orange cloth-covered boards elaborately decorated with a sailing scene in black that wraps around spine, lettered in black. Condition is Good: binding strong & hinges secure, but with a slight rightward lean. Pages creamy white with moderate tanning, unmarked except MANY soiled spots & smudges scattered randomly throughout text. The ffep has a plot summary, likely clipped from the missing DJ flap, pasted down, with some crayon & pen notations to both front endpapers. Exterior is colorful, with mild fading & soil. NO DJ. We are also offering a later printing from 1944, SIGNED by the AUTHOR (please see our listing # 026420). Interior is tight through repair and text is mostly unmarked except for ink stamps of library. Flap from DJ pasted within front end papers, as well as notes on presentation to library, reading circle dates, etc. Stains on page edges. Hardcover has blue cloth boards with white ink lettering and designs, but (obviously) no whole DJ. Shelf wear apparent on boards which are worn through the cloth although repaired with tape.
