Mathematics has many important practical applications, but should not be of interest only to the scientist. There is much in mathematical thought which should interest the arts student, and much which is beautiful and should interest everyone. Those who profess mathematics do so because they enjoy it. To understand and share in this enjoyment, the reader is invited to follow some of the arguments given in the following pages. Explanations have been made as detailed as is reasonably possible. Although tricks and puzzles which do not involve some general principle have, on the whole, been omitted, much that is recreational will be found here. For a complete understanding of this book the reader should, comes across them; but even if he goes through the book like the gentleman "who read Euclid, all except the A's and the B's and the pictures of scratches and scrawls", he will find enough of a purely descriptive nature to provide entertainment and instruction.
