Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. BE1 - A first edition (complete numberline) hardcover book SIGNED by author on the title page in very good condition in very good dust jacket. Dust jacket has label on the front, some wrinkling and chipping on the edges and corners, light discoloration and shelf wear. Book has some bumped corners, wrinkling on the spine edges, light tanning and shelf wear.THE STORY OF AN INTENSE FEMALE FRIENDSHIP FUELED BY AFFECTION, ENGY, AND PRIDE - AND EACH WOMAN'S FEAR THAT SHE WOULD BE NOTHING WITHOUT THE OTHER. 9.5"x6.5", 449 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed. Some friendships, like romance, have the feeling of fate. Skinny, nine-year-old orphaned Dores is working in the kitchen of a sugar plantation in 1930s Brazil when in walks a girl who changes everything. Graça, the spoiled daughter of a wealthy sugar baron, is clever, well fed, pretty, and thrillingly ill behaved. Born to wildly different worlds, Dores and Graça quickly bond over shared mischief, and then, on a deeper level, over music. One has a voice like a songbird; the other feels melodies in her soul and composes lyrics to match. Music will become their shared passion, the source of their partnership and their rivalry, and for each, the only way out of the life to which each was born. But only one of the two is destined to be a star. Their intimate, volatile bond will determine each of their fortunes - and haunt their memories. Traveling from Brazil's inland sugar plantations to the rowdy streets of Rio de Janeiro's famous Lapa neighborhood, from Los Angeles during the Golden Age of Hollywood back to the irresistible drumbeat of home, The Air You Breathe unfurls a moving portrait of a lifelong friendship--its unparalleled rewards and lasting losses - and considers what we owe to the relationships that shape our lives. Add to basket4to. Wrappers. 500 copies printed, this copy signed on the title-page by Alasdair Gray. Joan Ure (nom de plume of Elizabeth Thomson Clark, née Carswell, 1918-1978) was best known for her work for the Scottish theatre, and her collaboration with Ian Hamilton Finlay. The only book she published in her lifetime was Two Plays (1970: Seven Characters out of the Dream and I See Myself as This Young Girl). Alasdair Gray (1934-2019) met Ure through Archie Hind, and is as generous about her as he is bitter about her critical predicament. "Joan's plays had few productions because she worked in Scotland where hardly any theatres use local authors. Her plays were mostly short, witty, and managements distrust new writing that is cleverer than them. They think it may be stupid . . . Since her death in 1978," he writes," Joan's work has been unfairly neglected. I am glad to see this book of her poems." "There was this woman and she had this tiny talent. / I call it talent for things must have a name. / She had this talent that it happened to be death / to hide. She knew this empirically because, having, / the first time, tried to hide it, she / broke out in a rash. / But she was Scots and difficult to convince . . .".
