Er erhielt 1994 zusammen mit Jassir Arafat und Jitzchak Rabin den Friedensnobelpreis für seine Verdienste im Oslo-Friedensprozess. Als Szymon Perski wurde er 1923 in Polen geboren. Seine Familie wanderte 1934 aus Furcht vor dem wachsenden Antisemitismus nach Palästina aus. Im Alter von 15 Jahren tritt Peres in einen Kibbutz ein, dort wird er politisch geprägt, als er David Ben Gurion (1886-1973) begegnet. Als Ben Gurion am 14. Mai 1948 den Staat Israel ausruft, ist Peres bereits sein Berater und enger Vertrauter. Später wird er alle wichtigen Staatsämter innehaben: dutzende Ministerposten, zwei Mal war er Regierungschef und am Ende da war er schon über 80 Staatspräsident. Bei seiner Rede vor dem Deutschen Bundestag am 27. Januar 2010 anlässlich der Gedenkstunde zum Tag des Gedenkens an die Opfer des Nationalsozialismus erinnerte Peres an das Schicksal seiner Familie in seinem Geburtsort Wiszniewo: Als die Nazis in Wiszniewo einmarschierten, befahlen sie allen Juden, sich in der Synagoge zu versammeln. Mein Großvater ging als erster hinein, eingehüllt in denselben Gebetsmantel, in den ich mich als Kind schon eingewickelt hatte. Seine Familie folgte ihm. Die Türen wurden von draußen verriegelt, und das Holzgebäude wurde angezündet. Von der gesamten Gemeinde blieben nur glühende Asche und Rauch.".
