In 1802-1803, the Waldensian Jacques Maranda (1742-1810) published the essay Tableau du Piemont. The work provoked the indignation of a leading intellectual in Turin at the time, Count Giuseppe Nuvolone Pergamo di Scandeluzza. Nuvolone responded to Maranda by publishing a memoir, approved by the Turin Agricultural Society on January 26, 1804, titled Sur les progrès de l'agriculture et de l'industrie en Piémont depuis mille ans. In it, Count Nuvolone, also in his capacity as vice-president of the Agricultural Society, drawing on his extensive agronomic experience, demonstrated to Maranda -who had argued that Piedmontese agriculture had remained essentially unchanged over the past thousand years- the progress achieved in agriculture and manufacturing, especially in the last century, through experimentation and research. Nuvolone Pergamo, in particular, highlights the improvement of irrigation canals, the greater variety of wheat types, progress in soil treatment, the production and processing of silk, linen, and wool, the cultivation of mulberry, chestnut, olive, and hazelnut trees, and finally the production of wine (pp. 74-79). Nuvolone's criticisms of Maranda, however, are not limited solely to agronomic aspects but also concern Catholic worship, recalling the 1801 Concordat signed between Pius VII and Napoleon (cf. G. Benedetto, eds., Turin, 2002, pp. 345-360).?Altro ramo notevole della manifattura piemontese erano le ?forges' o fucine di seconda fusione (a carbone di legna), che trattavano quasi esclusivamente materia prima ricavata sul posto. Gli stabilimenti più importanti erano a Dronero, dove si fabbricavano ogni genere di strumenti per l'agricoltura ed anche per ?differeus mêtiers e t arts mécaniques'; altre fucine erano a Giaveno, Pont e nella valle d'Aosta. In conclusione, nel decennio precedente alla rivoluzione francese, la bilancia dei pagamenti del Piemonte era attiva, con un margine di tre-quattro milioni annui. Al N. sfugge però la svalutazione in atto della moneta piemontese, il cui valore, nello stesso torno di tempo, andava sempre più diminuendo, com'è comprovato anche dal prezzo della terra, all'incirca raddoppiato tra il 1750 e d il 1780. La conclusione a cui il N. perviene, e cioè che ?le Piemont, sous la vigilance du Gouvernement éclairant et animant l'industrie nationale. est un pays très fertile et abondant en toute sorte de choses nécessaires à la vie, et en même tems des commodités jusqu'alors inconnues?, appare un poco sospetta di apologia. Ed infatti, l'ultima cura del N. è di dimostrare come ?leges sine moribus vanae proficiant'.
