Il suo libro The Jewish Republic è considerato la più potente affermazione della teoria repubblicana nei primi anni della Repubblica olandese. Cunaeus è ricordato per il suo libro De Republica Hebraeorum (noto anche come Respublica Hebraeorum e The Hebrew Republic) in cui descriveva l'antico regno ebraico come un modello di governo repubblicano. Il lavoro fu acclamato e pubblicato in almeno sette edizioni tra il 1617 e il 1700. Fu tradotto in olandese, francese e inglese.
