First Edition. Many black & white illus. [22] pp., five pageworks bound-in & one laid-in. 4to, printed wrappers. Frankfurt: Studio Galerie, 1967. The scarce and inventive catalogue for an epochal exhibition organized by student-curators at Goethe University Frankfurt?s gallery, six artists contributed original ?pageworks? that were included in the catalogue; edition of 500 copies. The selection of artists (62 total) was truly global in scale, bringing together artists based in America, such as Christo, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Yayoi Kusama, Sol LeWitt, Agnes Martin, Frank Stella, etc. with fledgling European artists such as Enrico Castellani, Jan Dibbets, Konrad Lueg, Charlotte Posenenske, Bridget Riley, Peter Roehr, Diter Rot, etc. Renate Wiehager, curator of a re-creation of this exhibition in 2017, considers the 1967 show ?the first thematic exhibition of Minimalist trends in Germany?[all] chosen because they featured ?serial arrangement? as a visual characteristic.? 62 artworks by 48 different artists were presented in the exhibition, in addition to six wonderful original pageworks contributed by Ewerdt Hilgemann, Posenenske, Roehr, Lueg, Herman de Vries, and Kuno Gonschior (listed with titles on p. [3]). There are texts by Siegfried Bartels and then the curators detailing the aims of their pioneering exhibition. Many of the artists? works are reproduced with small images, and the check-list includes personal statements from the artists; Kusama for instance, states (in trans.): ?During the time I was creating my net paintings, I felt unable to leave my studio. The nets protected me from the outside world like the curtains of a window. I became like an automaton, getting up at the same time every morning and starting to work. Then I experience a shock: one day I decided to look out the window. I saw nothing but my own nets covering the entire outside world. This hallucination was the impetus for many of my subsequent works.? In near fine condition; some minor rubbing to the extremities, small chip to head of spine. Ownership inscription of Kuno Gonschior, one of the artists in the show, to the back cover. WorldCat records a handful of examples of this catalogue in North America. ? R. Wiehager, ed., Minimalism in Germany. The Sixties (2012), pp. 57 & 110-11 (pictured).
