Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fine. J. Ley Pethybridge (illustrator). Second Edition. This very rare copy is bound in brown floral embossed cloth with bright gilt titling to the spine. There are gilt top page edges the other edges are uncut. A dust wrapper is not called for. Here's a rich, collector?minded portrait of Footprints of Former Men in Far Cornwall by Rev. Robert Stephen Hawker, a book that sits at the crossroads of folklore, antiquarian curiosity, and the romantic imagination. First published in 1870, Footprints of Former Men in Far Cornwall gathers a series of Hawker's essays?many originally printed in periodicals?into a single volume. It is not a travelogue in the conventional sense, nor a systematic history. Instead, it is a literary mosaic: part folklore, part antiquarian sketch, part personal reminiscence, and part mythopoetic invention. Hawker, the eccentric vicar of Morwenstow, writes as a man half in this world and half in an older, more enchanted Cornwall. Hawker preserves stories of shipwrecks and wreckers, saints and hermits, spectral visitations, local heroes and villains, the strange, the miraculous, and the half?remembered. He treats folklore not as quaint anecdote but as living cultural memory, giving it dignity and emotional weight. Ref F 5.
