Add to basketThis exquisitely miniature map (12.5cm x 8.5cm) of Africa was engraved on copper by 'Petrus Kaerius Caelevit', i.e. Pieter Keere engraved], arguably the finest engraver during the Dutch Golden Era of cartography. He was more than seventy years old when he engraved the maps for the Prospect (King, p. 116, suggests 1642); it is un…derstandable why the engraving was not of the very high standard which he displayed when he was younger. Van den Keere died in the year of the maps first publication. William Humble published. This map was published in 1646 in his Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World The English text on the verso is The Description of AFRICA. The last word of verso text of the map is 'Parents', which confirms 1646 as the date of publication. The map is frequently and confusingly referred to as the mini-Speed, probably because the map seems to be a reduction of Speed's folio map, Africæ described, the first English map of the continent, published in 1626 {Betz #62}. Despite the maps' similarities, there are also clear differences, such as in the lake and river system. There are no lines of longitude, but 10°E, engraved on the equator and east of longitude the Canary Islands, suggests that an island in the Azores was the prime meridian.
